Following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo contract by Manchester United, Super Eagles legend Mikel Obi came out to blast the Portuguese forward. According to the former Chelsea and Stoke City player he said he is disappointed with the five time Ballon d’Or winner and he also said he has always liked Messi more than him.
Mikel Obi who retired early this year from professional football said: “I’ve never been a Ronaldo fan really. For me, when a player has so much ego, I don’t really get it. He’s never been one of my favourite players and that’s why I always go for Messi really.”
He was asked about the problem the former Manchester United star poses to other manager’s dressing room, and he said: “No definitely, I mean if someone comes out and give such an interview, what makes you think, if he signs for your club in January he won’t do the same?
He also said: “So, I mean every club is going to be aware of that….but listen he is Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s one of the greatest players to ever have played the game. I think he’s going to get another club in January and continue his football career.”
“But for me, It’s just a horrible scenario, he’s done so much for the club, and to see it end this way, it’s just horrible. On his part really, I would say, that interview shouldn’t have been done, wrong timing as well.” “It’s just not right. It doesn’t look right for such a player that has achieved so much in the game.”
Following his comment on Ronaldo, football fans has come out to lash on him telling him that he should not forget that they are age mates and yet he has already retired while Ronaldo is still shining in both club and country level.
John Mikel Obi became popular after the Under World Cup in Holland the same year Lionel Messi broke out as well. Many have come out to say he should have been quite about the Ronaldo and Messi comparison as he should have been in their category as well if he had done very well.
Mikel Obi never won an individual award in his playing career while Messi and Ronaldo who are his age mates have won numerous individual awards.
