The BET Award for Best International Act is an award given to honour the outstanding achievements of international artists. The African category was initially done separate until it was combined with what we have today.
Nigeria’s Ayo Balogun aka Wizkid holds the record for most wins in this category with the first coming in 2010. The last winner (2019) of the BET International Act category also goes to Nigerian singer, Burnaboy who has been shortlisted for the BET award 2020 alongside Rema.
Here are the list nominees for the BET International act award 2020
- Burnaboy: Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu professionally known as Burnaboy is nominated for the second year in a row. The’Ye’ crooner was outstanding with his ‘African Giant’ album which got him a nomination in the prestigious Grammy Awards (2019) which he lost to Angelique Kidjo. He has hit songs such as ‘Anybody’, ‘Ye’, ‘Dangote’, and so on topping music charts worldwide.
- Santan Dave: British rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer, David Orobosa Omoregie aka Santan Dave is also on the BET nominee list. The rapper who is born to Nigerian parents has his debut album ‘Psychodrama‘ (2019) met with widespread critical acclaim and debuted at number one on the UK Album chart. The album also has the biggest first-week streams for a British rap album. The Brit award winner biggest songs include ‘Thiago Silva’, ‘Wanna Know‘ remix featuring Drake, ‘Funky Friday‘, and so on.
- Innoss’B: Innocent Didace Balume aka Innoss’B is a Congolese singer, songwriter, rapper, percussionist, and dancer. He got his first BET awards nomination after becoming a fast-growing artist in DR.Congo. At age 12, he won the Vodacom Super Star in DR Congo with more than 1.3 million votes throughout the country. He has since recorded and toured with Senegalese Grammy award winner, Akon. His biggest songs include ‘Lelo Lelo’, ‘Pola’ etc.
- Ninho: French rapper, William Nzobazola is better known by his stage name Ninho also had his debut nomination by BET Award. The Congolese born rapper has four successful albums to his credit. His latest album ‘M.I.L.S 3’ debuted as number one on the France Album chart.
- Sho Madjozi: South African rapper and poet, Maya Christianah Xichavo Wegerif aka Sho Madjozi is the only female in this category. she is regarded as one of the best performers in Africa. she has won several awards in her native South Africa and has been nominated in the BET new International Act and Best New Comer Categories. some of her hit songs include ‘John Cena’, ‘Huku’, ‘Limpopo Champions League’ and so on.
- Stormzy: British rapper, songwriter, and singer, Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo better known as Stormzy is another top act in this category. The rapper who was born in London, the United Kingdom to Ghanaian parents. The MOBO award winner has to compete with Burnaboy for the 2020 BET International Act award. Stormzy featured Burnaboy and Ed’Sheeran in his 2019 hit ‘Own It’. He has other hit songs such as ‘Shut up’, ‘Vossi Bop; and so on.
- S. Pri Noir: Another French rapper in this category is Malick Mendosa professionaly known as S. Pri Noir. The rapper of Senegalese descent has several albums to his credit which include ‘Etat D’esprit’, ‘Masque Blanc’, ’00S Licence to Kill’, ‘Le Monde ne suffit pas’ and so on.
