Medical and Dental Practitioners Erase 3 Names, Bench 12 Others

Medical And Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal have erased the names of three doctors, barring them from medical practice in Nigeria.

The Tribunal has directed the Registrar to immediately erase the names of the three doctors from the register of medical practitioners in the country.

Meanwhile, the Disciplinary Tribunal also suspended 12 doctors from medical practice in the country on professional misconduct.

According to Agency Reports, in 2019 and 2020, 37 doctors were arraigned for various forms of professional misconduct, and the Tribunal found 20 doctors guilty of the charges levelled against them.

Delivering the panel’s ruling, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Dr Abba Hassan, said that three doctors barred from practising medicine have had their names erased from the medical register.

Hassan explained that the 12 doctors were suspended from medical practice for a period ranging between three and six months.

He said if the medical doctors want to be re-instated, they need to apply to the Tribunal, adding that they should send a letter to an institution where they will be assigned to work under supervision for six months to one year.

Hassan stated that after the assignment period, the institution where the doctor has been assigned must recommend the doctor for reinstatement with the assurance that they have improved in their performance.

He observed that nine out of the 12 doctors suspended have since served their suspension, adding that one appealed against the decision of the Tribunal while one was currently serving out his suspension.

Hassan said that one of the doctors suspended died before the day that the judgment on his case was to be enforced.
