Real Madrid Brazilian defender Marcelo is likely to miss the return leg of their Uefa Champions League fixture against Chelsea. The player was called to monitor a polling station during local elections. The elections will take place on the 4th of next month in the Madrid assembly.
Real Madrid, who will be travelling to England next week for the return leg of the semifinals of the Uefa Champions League after drawing 1-1 with the English side, is likely to travel without the player. The Spanish club is “analysing the situation” to see if “any regulation will let Marcelo travel with the team.
The Brazilian left-back was featured in their 1-1 draw and was very instrumental in the game. He contributed to the team to help them secure the draw. The 13-time European champions could travel without him unless Marcelo is excused from his election-day duties. Other than that, he will not be permitted to travel with the rest of the team. The club has, however, appealed to the Electoral Commission, but the request was denied.
All Spaniards on the electoral register can be called up to work at polling stations and are paid 65 euros (£56), needing mitigating circumstances to be excused. The 32-year-old who was granted Spanish citizenship in 2011 became eligible to supervise elections, and so he was called to do so.
