English Premier League side Manchester City have won the case which was against them which was to prevent them from participating in the Uefa Champions League for two years. A City statement said: “Whilst Manchester City and its legal advisors are yet to review the full ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Club welcomes the implications of today’s ruling as a validation of the Club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present.
The statement also said: “The Club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered.” The decision will come as a relief for City players who are hoping to participate in Champions League competition. Manchester City has successfully overturned their two-year ban from European club competitions.
The chances of manager Pep Guardiola extending his contract which is supposed to expire in 2021 will now be boosted by the news that he will be playing in Europe’s premier club competition next season. Also, Man City will no longer fear losing star players such as Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne for the same reason.
Man City will also avoid missing out on lucrative Champions League revenue for two years, which could have forced the club to make structural changes. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) announced the club was cleared of “disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions” on Monday.
Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed “serious breaches” of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations between 2012 and 2016. City’s fine has been cut to 10m euros. They were originally fined 30m euros (£26.9m). It is now trouble for both Manchester United and Chelsea, also Leicester City who lost their game yesterday to Bournemouth, there are three teams and only slots are available United play Southampton today and if they win they will automatically be in the third place position.
