John Bull sat in his cell wondering how things changed for him so quickly; he thought about his wife and how she was coping with the new development in their lives. A day after the knife was found, John Bull was arrested for the murder of Bishop Chukwu and Isaac was finally acquainted.
“My love, where did you go that night? Why wouldn’t you tell anyone? Why are you making it so hard for us to help you?” Madam Lucy was frustrated but John Bull still did not budge. There was no way in hell he was going to tell her he was with his second wife Andrea Bull.
“If you want to be convicted of a crime you did not commit then suite yourself or did you do it? Did you kill Bishop Chukwu? Tell me the truth; I will not be angry with you”
“No I did not kill him… Do I look like a murderer? Do you honestly that I can kill a Bishop and Bishop Chukwu of all people?” he asked
“If you didn’t kill him then prove it, tell me where you went to that night” “I can tell you that it wasn’t Bishop Chukwu’s house” “then where did you go?” but John Bull was never going to tell and she was starting to grasp it.
John Bull was telling the truth, he never conceived a thought of killing anyone in his life talk more of going through with it. He knew that he was being set up but he wasn’t sure who would do that and the first suspect in his mind was his wife Madam Lucy; she was the only one on earth who had access to his locked study
The thought of his wife murdering someone and setting him up for it sent wicked chills down his spine; he thought deeply about it and came to the conclusion that if his wife was capable of murder, he must do all he could to make sure that she does not find out about Andrea and their sons. He couldn’t imagine what she could do to them. He looked at the injury in his palm and wondered if there was a lie he would have told Rebecca about; one better than the gate story he gave her.
“What are you doing here?” Rita said to Abel in a tone that told him that he was not welcome but he ignored and let himself in “Madam Lucy… you are here” he said surprised to see Madam Lucy
“I repeat, what do you want?” Rita was very impatient with him. She was tired of hearing all about the love he had for her; rejecting him did not keep him away, in fact it seemed as if he loved being rejected by her
“I want to talk to you” he replied looking at Madam Lucy and expecting her to give them privacy
“You can go ahead and talk I know everything” through cracked voice, one could tell that she had been crying but that was not Abel’s concern. He was there to convince Rita and he was desperate.
“Madam Lucy, please can you excuse us?”
“She is not going anywhere, so say what you have to say and go” Rita was still standing, waiting for him to finish so that she could open the door for him to leave.
Abel looked at her and invited her to come to church that evening and she accepted on the condition that he was not going to try to talk to her after service and he agreed “it’s a special service and it would be wonderful for you to come with everything happening now but I don’t think it is a good idea for you to come” he concluded referring to Madam Lucy and she nodded in concurrence.
Ever since Abel first professed his love for Rita, she had not been to church and that evening was the wrong day to resume because of everything that was going on with John Bull.
“Just go, I will be fine” Madam Lucy persuaded her to go. Deep down she wanted to go because she was curious as to what Abel meant when he said that he had something special for her. So she went.
The first thing that surprised her when she entered was how large the congregation was; she thought that after all the scandal and arrests attribute to The Christian People’s Ministry, a good number of people would have left the church to another church but the number seemed higher than the way it was three months ago.
During the praise and worship session, she looked out for Isaac but he was nowhere to be found “I guess he is not coming back here” she thought to herself. She thought about reaching out to him and apologizing to him for all the trouble he went through but advised herself out of it.
It was time for the sermon of the evening and Abel preached with so much passion that Rita found herself giggling at his hypocrisy. Members of the congregation screamed and stood in praises for the things that he was saying; at some point some people went to the alter to kneel and listen to how. He was a very charismatic preacher but not like Bishop Chukwu, he was more cool calm and collected; he was the type of person that made like look easy
When the sermon was over, he asked everyone to take their seats because he had a special announcement to make.
“This decision was easy for me because I know it was the voice of the lord that asked me to do it…” he started and concluded by saying that ever since he was ordained Bishop and General Overseer of the church; he had not been himself and after much prayer and revelation he finally realized that it was not his seat to sit on.
“God told me to release it to its rightful owner and that is what I am going to do tonight” by now there was conspicuous murmuring amongst the elders of the church. “With my power of as the General Overseer I hereby relinquish the position as the General Overseer to Rita Chukwudozie, I will go back to my duties as the assistant pastor of this church effective immediately” he finished and the entire church went wild; some people with disagreement while some with cheers.
He invited a shocked Rita to the stage to give her first speech as General Overseer and just as she reached the stage an elder managed to hold her back; he whispered into her ear “he has no power to ordain you G.O” “The church bylaws states that the current G.O can appoint anyone he desires to take his place” she replied and went to the stage.
Rita was right, the church bylaws gave an incumbent G.O the power to choose his successor; it was a law Bishop Chukwu inputted himself as a way of securing his legacy whenever he was ready to retire.
Rita could not believe what was going on; it all seemed like a dream “are you serious about this?” she whispered to Abel through a smile as they watched the crowd cheer for her
“Yes, I am doing it for you… nothing matters but you” he said as he took her hand and lifted it up. The crowd went wild as if he had them all under a spell. But the only person under a spell was him; the spell called ego… an ego that will not let him be until he got back the woman who Bishop Chukwu once took away from him.
