Newcastle United Forced Liverpool to 0-0 Draw

Liverpool failed to go five points clear at the top after a frustrating 0-0 stalemate against a determined Newcastle United side.

The Reds were good at everything but Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow was prepared for them. Karl Darlow made some very superb saves to keep his side in the game.

Newcastle, who have a wretched record against the Reds started the game on the front foot, creating some early chances with striker Callum Wilson failing to convert early on. Liverpool eventually got into the game and started asking questions of the Newcastle defence and keeper Darlow.

Mo Salah had the best chances of the half as he was fed a ball over the top but somehow failed to beat Darlow in a one-on-one situation. Also Liverpool Brazilian, Roberto Firmino also forced a good save from the Newcastle keeper with a header late in the first half as both sides settled for a 0-0 stalemate going into half time.

Liverpool tried to assert themselves in the second half but once again had to deal with a stubborn Newcastle side which was keen on avoiding defeat. Thiago Alcantara returned after a long time in the injury room but he could save them as he was not at his sharpest on the night. In the end, Newcastle United clawed their way to a deserved point as Steve Bruce’s side became the first to stop Liverpool from scoring this season.

The Reds ended the year 2020 in a goalless draw but head into 2021 top of the Premier League but with 33 points from 16 games, three ahead of second-placed Manchester United who has played a game less.
