Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi became the first South American to score 80 international goals as his Argentina side beat Uruguay in World Cup qualifying 3-0. The present Paris Saint-Germain star player opened the scoring for his side with a floated cross that somehow evaded the goalkeeper in the first 38-minute of the game.
The second goal came from Rodrigo de Paul to extend Argentina’s lead to 2-0 before Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez rounded up the scoring after the break. Speaking on his new record, the former Barcelona player said: “We played a great game. Everything worked out perfectly.”
Lionel Messi also said Uruguay waited for him, and they generate danger. But, once he got the first goal, they started to find space, and the goals came. Argentina has now played 24 games without losing any, and their latest win keeps up the pressure on Brazil in South America’s World Cup qualifying group.
The victory narrows the gap between Brazil and the top of the 10-team group to six points after Brazil drew 0-0 with Colombia earlier on Sunday.
