Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona and Argentina captain Lionel Messi appealed to the decline of the red card he received in their Super Cup final against Athletic Bilbao turned down, and punishment award him.
The Argentine star was given a straight red card in the game which ended 3-2 in favour of Bilbao as they lift the Spanish Super Cup. Lionel Messi was sent out in the 119th minute of the game after taking a swing at Asier Villalibre which VAR revealed before the referee gave him the red card.
It was Lionel Messi’s first red card in Barcelona jersey in his 17-years with the club. Barcelona appealed against the card, but the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that he will still serve the punishment on Tuesday.
Messi is expected to miss Barca’s next two games, and he will miss the Copa del Rey game against Cornella and the league trip to Elche. He will return to face Villalibre again on the 31st of January when they play Athletic Bilbao.
