It was a night to remember for German Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig as they stunned Spanish giants Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Thursday night’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final which was played in Lisbon, Portugal. Leipzig set record as it is there first ever semi-final in the UEFA Champions League in their 11-year history.
They are the second German team in the competition but currently first in the semi-finals for the Uefa Champions League 2019/20 season. Bayern Munich and another Spanish team will be playing each other today night in their own semi-final game. Red Bull Leipzig and Atletico Madrid went into the first half of the game in a stalemate as the first 45 minutes ended 0-0.
Red Bull Leipzig broke the deadlock through Olmo’s header which came from Marcel Sabitzer’s cross from the right, but the Spaniard bounced back after a one-two pass in the Germans penalty box, Portuguese star player Joao Felix was brought down just in front of the goal post and was awarded a penalty.
The young star levelled the scores to make it 1-1 but things changed with just three minutes left to play Diego Simeone men were punished for their characteristically defensive error as Tyler Adams fired a low levelled shot which was deflected into the back of the net to hand the Germans the victory and book a semi-final spot for them with Paris St-Germain.
