Lai Mohammed Reveals Cause Of Violence During EndSARS Protests
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has finally revealed what led to the violence that erupted during the recent EndSARS protests in some parts of the country.
speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting with members of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria in Abuja, Mohammed noted that the violence was caused by fake news and disinformation.
According to the Minister, fake news and disinformation spread like wildfire on social media during the End SARS protests, thereby leading to killings and vandalism in different states across Nigeria.
He recalled that the federal government had been raising the alarm on the risks posed by fake news since 2017 adding that the violence during the EndSARS protests was not a surprise to him.
Mohammed further revealed that the federal government devoted the National Council on Information to the issue of fake news, hate speech, and disinformation.
Also, he said the national campaign against fake news and disinformation was launched in 2018.
