Lai Mohammed Explains Rationale Behind Water Resources Bill

Share

Given the reactions trailing the National water resources bill, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has dismissed what he described as misinformation about the Bill.

Speaking on the Bill, the Minister appealed to Nigerians to avoid being misled by those who have chosen to politicise it, adding that the Bill is for the good of the nation and has no hidden agenda.

He opined that many of those condemning the National Water Resources Bill 2020 either have not read it or do not understand its provisions.

Mohammed stated that there is nothing new about the National Water Resources Bill, which he described as an amalgamation of Water Resources Laws that have been in existence for a long time.

According to him, the existing water resources laws are water Resources Act, Cap W2 LFN 2004, River Basin Development Authority Act and Cap R9 LFN 2004, the Nigeria Hydrological Services.

Others are Agency(Establishment) Act, Cap N1100A, LFN 2004 and the National Water Resources Institute Act, Cap N83 LFN 2004.

On why the existing laws were repackaged as the National Water Resources Bill 2020, Mohammed said the laws are being re-enacted with necessary modifications.

He stated that the modifications are meant to bring the laws in line with current global trends as well as best practices in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for the economic development of Nigeria and the wellbeing of its citizens.
