Edward VIII abdicated his throne to marry the love of his life, Wallis Simpson.
Prince Edward became the King of the United Kingdom after the death of his father King George V. Though he ruled for less than a year, he claimed to have found love and as a result chose his marriage over the throne.
Edward was a handsome and charming young man growing up who enjoyed playing gulf and attending parties. He was unmarried at the time he ascended the throne after the death of his father in 1936.
In June 1931, Edward met his wife at one of the parties he attended. Wallis Simpson, born an American in 1896. She was an American socialite and a divorcee who at that time, had recently moved to London with her second husband. She and the Prince became good friend afterwards.
After her divorce from her second husband, the prince now King Edward declared his interest to marry her. This let to a lot of controversies, rift and arguments in the society and the royal family. Wallis was American and at that time, she could not become Queen. It caused an uproar in the parliament as many threatened to resign. She was accused of being a nazi spy and seducing the King. All of these did not change the intentions of King Edward as he declared his love for Wallis.
King Edward on 11th December, 1936, abdicated his throne saying “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as i would wish to do without the help and support of the woman i love.”
Edward’s brother Albert became King after him . Wallis and Edward got married in June 1937 and afterwards moved to France.
The couple lived in Paris and spent most of their time shopping and partying. In 1940, Edward was appointed the Governor and Commander of Chief of the Bahama Island.
Edward died on May 28, 1972 and Wallis died 14 years later. They were buried side by side at the Windsor Castle.
