Journalist In Remand For Criticising Lia Mohammed

A Nigerian journalist has been kept in Police custody by the order of a Federal High Court in Abuja, over one of his works that criticised the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

Rotimi Jolayemi, popularly referred to as Oba Akewi was recently arrested after one of his Yoruba poetic song about Lai Mohammed went viral.

Oba Akewi is currently facing a six-count charge over the audio file of his work as said to have caused hatred, ill will and insults on the Minister of Information and Culture.

Justice Anuwuli Chikere while adjuring the siting ordered that Oba Akewi be remanded in the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Headquarters in Abuja until the next sitting.

Oba Akewi who is currently in custody has pleaded not guilty to the six counts charged levelled on him and but has complained of ill health.

He has been arrested since May 5, 2020, after one of his pieces was said to be in contravention of section 24(!)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act 2015.

Oba Akewiis the Vice-Chairman, Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter and also has a radio program on the Osun State Broadcasting Service and Radio Kwara.
