Jose Mourinho started his spell as AS Roma head coach on a good note as he won at Turkish side Trabzonspor in the Europa Conference League play-off first leg. Roma skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini scored the opener for Roma when he converted Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross.

The equaliser came in from Andreas Cornelius as a super-sub for Trabzonspor. But Uzbekistan striker Eldor Shomurodov scored a late winner on his AS Roma debut following his summer move from Genoa.

Jose Mourinho’s side will qualify for the group stage of the new third-tier European competition, provided they win their next game. If they lose the next, they will not make it to the group stage. They will play their next match next week Thursday at Stadio Olimpico, which is the return leg.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Mourinho replaced Paulo Fonseca at the end of last season. He will start his Italian Serie A campaign with Roma against Fiorentina on Sunday.
