Johnny Drille: Should We Be Expecting a Contemporary Folk Album Soon?

Share

With the recent release of his single, Papa, to mark Fathers’ Day celebration, Mavin Records artist Johnny Drille is solidifying himself as Nigeria’s foremost Contemporary Folk artist. While the subject of most of his songs is love, his sound and lyrical technique are strong pointers to the genre under which his music falls. As with most folk songs, Johnny’s music always tells a story in enchanting and interesting ways. But there is a burning question considering how long he has been on the scene: when are we getting an album? Soon?

Since the release of his debut hit track, Wait For Me, and his subsequent signing to Don Jazzy’s record label, Johnny Drille has kept his fans and the general public entertained with new single releases every once in a while. He has released three songs this year alone and doesn’t seem like he wants to stop.

The truth is, from Wait For Me to Romeo and Juliet, to Love Don’t Lie, to his collaboration with Simi, Hallelujah, we have come to love him more with every new music he gives. We are in no doubt about the quality of his talent or music. However, we also yearn for a holistic soaring of his work. We would very much love to get a wholesome body of work in his name.

Moreover, there aren’t many non-indigenous folk artists in the country currently. Of course, we do have a lot of indigenous folk musicians. Ranging from Beautiful Nubia to Bright Chimezie, to Mike Ejeagha. Johnny Drille appears to be a lone wolf in his own genre and it would be nice to have a complete body of work for reference purpose and further growth of it.

Johnny is also a music producer. Besides producing most of his own songs, he has produced a number of notable songs by other artists. One of them is Jaiye (Time of Our Lives) by his label mate, Ladipoe. So, should we be expecting an album from Johnny Drille soon? We are almost certain it would be a delight to hear!
