English Premier League struggling side Watford have released their winger Ismaila Sarr to join Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations after holding back the player alongside Nigerian forward Emmanuel Dennis. The Premier League club said Sarr was injured after Senegal accused them of refusing to release him for the tournament, which starts on 9 January.

Senegal confirmed that the 23-year-old left London for Cameroon yesterday, Tuesday. Since November, Sarr has been out with knee ligament damage, and Watford invited his nation to send their doctor to assess his injury.
Fifa rules state any player called up for international duty must be released, even if injured, so that the country’s medical staff can assess them. Senegal’s first Group B match will be against Zimbabwe on Monday, a day after the opening game.
