Ahead of the October 10 Governorship elections in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has ordered that 6,000 smart card readers should be moved from Oyo to Ondo state.

According to the INEC, the card readers would be used in replacement of the ones that got burnt at the Commission’s headquarters in Akure, the Ondo State Capital.

INEC’s spokesperson, Festus Okoye, who disclosed this in Akure said an order had been given that all the card readers in its Oyo state office should be moved down to Ondo state.

He added that the INEC office in Oyo has over 6,000 smart card readers noting that the commission won’t have any problem reconfiguring and using them and for the forthcoming Ondo elections.

He explained that it will take another six months to purchase new card readers, hence, the need for replacement from a state where an election is not holding. Festus said INEC has recovered from the fire outbreak in its Akure office and would be proceeding with the Ondo State elections.

You will recall that the electoral body has confirmed that 5, 141 smart card readers got burnt at its office in Akure due to an electrical surge which affected the ICT Unit of the commission.
