Hulu Buys ‘Untouchable’ Weinstein Documentary

Hulu has bought the U.S. rights to Untouchable, a feature doc about disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein. The documentary was acquired in a seven-figure deal.

The film, directed by Ursula Macfarlane, had its premiere at Sundance. It outlines Weinstein’s rise in the film industry before his disgrace in 2017. Amid a series of allegations of sexual harassment, assault and rape that began an international conversation about male privilege. It eventually led Weinstein to be charged in New York with rape and several other crimes in May 2018. Weinstein denies the charges that have been brought against him.

Macfarlane is an experienced documentary director who wants to show audiences sides of the story they haven’t seen yet from online and print media. She spoke with survivors of assault and company insiders from Miramax and the Weinstein Company. At least those who had the courage to speak.

Untouchable aims to humanize the survivors and encourage connection that will spark a true emotional response in a way that articles cannot simply capture.

Embankment Films is handling sales and sealed the Hulu deal. Lightbox, the shingle that made Whitney and is behind the upcoming Tina Turner, produced the film. For Hulu, which is now fully controlled by Disney, it is the third deal for a 2019 Sundance documentary.

Co-founders of Lightbox, Simon and Jonathan Chinn said. “We are thrilled that Untouchable has been acquired by Hulu. Which is the perfect home in the U.S. for a film that should serve both as a cautionary tale for the younger generation and an enduring example of how seemingly unchecked power can be held to account when courageous people choose to speak out.”
