The House of Representatives has called for the discontinuation of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC scheme. EveryEvery.ng gathered that the Nigeria Alteration Bill, 2020, which is seeking to repeal the NYSC Act, is billed for the second reading in the house of representatives.
A Lawmaker, Mr Awaji Abiante, who sponsored the bill to discontinue the NYSC scheme, explained why the federal government should scrap the scheme.
In the explanatory memorandum of the proposal, Abiante said he wants the discontinuation of the scheme due to the continued kidnapping and killing of innocent corps members because of banditry, religious extremism and violence in some parts of Nigeria.
The Lawmaker further argued that public and private agencies no longer recruit qualified Nigerian youths.
He added that the corps members are not well remunerated and get discarded with impunity at the end of their service year without the hope of being gainfully employed.
Abiante explained that the National Youth Service Corps management now considers posting corps members to their geopolitical zone due to insecurity across the country.
He noted that the deployment of corps members to their geopolitical zones defeats one of the objectives of setting up the service corps.
