These days it seems like the amount if original movies/TV shows is on a huge decline. I’m very sure you don’t know this , but most shows on television right now are either sequels, prequels, spinoffs reboots or re-makes or a combination of all of them as we saw in X-men: days of future’s past.
Does it mean that Hollywood are lacking original ideas? With the way they operate, it seems that these Hollywood film producers would rather want to bank on the success of past movies than risking releasing new material that would cause them to loose a great deal of money. The chances of attracting a larger audiences lies on their familiarity with the characters of the films. Even with that, continuous churning out sequels of the same franchise still doesn’t guarantee its success, Just ask the studio that makes the Ride Along movies.
What could be the cause of the decrease in creativity in Hollywood? The most common notion is that these companies exists just to make money. Making film for the purpose of art or originality is even out of the question for them.
In my previous article about “typecasting”, I wrote about the popular saying ” if it broke, don’t fix it”. Their dream here is to make money and be successful. Evidently, their dreams are coming through as these sequels and remakes are bringing in unimaginable income for them. So what’s the problem? Someone might ask. Why proffer a solution to something that isn’t even a problem? The fans love it, so why not keep giving them what they want? These fans do not want new stories, they are already used to these their favorite characters and are always willing to pay money to watch them grow and evolve.
