In a bid to shun examination malpractice and bring sanity to its system, the management of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, has expelled 10 students and rusticated 103 others over examination fraud.
According to the news from the institution, four students from the Biology department were expelled. Two students from the Department of Biotechnology, one from Biochemistry, one from Maritime and Management Technology, and a student from Information Management Technology completes the list of students expelled from the Imo state-based institution.
At its 144th meeting, the Senate considered the report on the cases of the students accused of examination misconduct. The students were said to be in possession of cellphones, which contained answers relevant to the exams conducted during the 2016/17 Rain Semester examinations.
FUTO management has also rusticated 103 students following Senate consideration at the same meeting based on the examination misconduct report, which found them liable for impersonation and copying from one another.
The school management didn’t stop at these, some staff of the institution were either terminated, dismissed or suspended from duty. The appointment of staff of the institution’s college (FUTO International Secondary School) was terminated for alleged gross misconduct bordering on the case of abandonment of duty.
A staff of the Biological Sciences, liable for dishonesty was dismissed after the report and recommendations of the Junior Staff Disciplinary Advisory Committee. Another staff was also found guilty of unauthorized sale of university properties and was consequently suspended from duty for three months.
The institution broke this news through its publication on FUTO news. Those suspended are to resume on the particular dates attached to their letter.
