Share

Flashbacks are meant for looking back in the social media world with the hashtag #FBF trending on all of its platforms. FBF stands for Flashback Friday in this sense and is the name of a weekly social media posting trend and hashtag game that people from all over the world uses online to share and look back fondly on some of their favorite memories – hence the “flashback” theme. This can relate to anything that happened in the past including the old school styles.

In the fashion world, many styles have come and has been modernized. Fashion is all about trends and what is in vogue. In the last four to five decades, there are some common trendy looks (haircuts and wears) you would see in this part of the world. A look at my grandpa’s photo album got me laughing even though I could relate to some of the fashion styles then that have been modernized. My grandpa once said jokingly ‘’these are the styles that swept off feet of slay queens back in the days’’.

Let’s take a look at some of these styles that were in vogue in the past:

Afro Hairstyles: This one common old school styles hairstyle rocked by men and women those days. Afro also known as ‘fro’ is worn naturally outward by people with lengthy or even medium length kinky hair texture, or specifically styled in such a fashion by individuals with naturally curly or straight hair. People make this hairstyle by combing the hair away from the scalp, allowing the hair to extend out from the head in a large, rounded shape, much like a cloud or ball. Men rock Afro with a moustache/beards to make them have a unique look. Almost every home owns an Afro-pick; a wide-toothed comb used to keep in shape and maintain the hairstyle. Also, almost everyone wants to look like the famous Jimmy Hendrix Blues-Rock band.

Bootcut Trousers: Trousers sewn like ladies’ palazzo were rocked by men those days. These trousers have wide opening at the end of the length. These loose-fitting trousers were mostly worn by the masculine world then. Different kinds of fabrics were used including jeans. This style is very popular in the ’80s. Granny in his usual humor style said “you can hide your girl in those trousers when a fight breaks out in the club” lol! These days, modern type of boot cuts are adorned by both male and female. Ladies especially wear these Bootcut trousers to their offices these days.

Punk Haircut: If you check the photos of the Nigerian Dream Team that won gold at1996 Olympic football event, you would see many of the players rocking a punk most especially the team’s talisman Kanu Nwankwo. This was the style that was in vogue for fashionable men in the last two to three decades. Nowadays, you’ll see men in beards, dreads, and other nice hairstyles. Before this, is the punk haircut which is still trendy with new touches today. Punk is always with long hair at the top with a shaved sides and back of the head.

High-Heel Shoes: A man or a woman’s dressing is never complete with high-heel shoes in the 70’s-90’s. The vintage 70’s disco shoes were trendy among fashionable men and women. The shoes are very good for dancing in clubs and parties. This can also be referred to as ‘Platform shoes’ which has high heels and has the heel raised significantly higher than the ball of the foot. High-heel shoes have changed a lot in the past decades, the ones wore in the 70’s still remain a classic. These old school styles are having a huge comeback.
