FIVE NIGERIAN COMIC BOOKS TO READ

Share

Nigerians have written many comic books you will love to read; you’ll even want some to make it to the TV screen. A comic book is a publication that consists of comic art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes. Just as Marvel Studios has been producing comical books, I suggest Nollywood would take a cue from their American counterpart. ‘Supa Strikaz’ is one comic book cherished by kids and football lovers today. Nigerian comic writers have been brilliant in their panels; descriptive prose and written narrative have been fantastic. If you are a lover of comic books or you have to get one for your ward(s), then these are 5 comic books to read by Nigerians in no particular order.

  • AJE

This is a comic book written by the trio of Wale Awelenje, Jide Martins and Tobe ‘’Max’’ Ezeogu. The book was published by the Comic Republic. Aje has a female at the driver’s seat (heroine). It is a grand journey where a young heroine will hunt for the strength to save the past, present and future. Teni (heroine) casts a curse on her boyfriend in a rush of jealous rage and purple lightning. Things then escalate from there.

  • SPIRIT WARS

Spirit Wars is written by Mamode Ogbewele. It is published by Vortex Comics, a Nigerian Comic book company. The book has amazing heroes in a cross over which brings together different characters from the Vortex Universe. The first issue of the event focuses on the character Ajageba as he comes back from the dead and attempts to put together an army of African gods to fight against angels in heaven.

  • THE MIGHT OF GUARDIAN PRIME

This is a story written by Jide Martins and Ozo Ezeogu. It is a Web-Comic by the Comic Republic. This is an interesting comic book that showcases Nigerian Superman. Tunde Jaiye is the fifth element, one of the five essential elements on earth (earth, air, water, fire and man). He is the perfect man created the way God intended man to be (in His image). He can do everything a normal man can do; only magnified to almost godlike levels. He is the guardian born to the human race as is customary every 2000 years. He is a Guardian Prime.

  • IRETI BIDEMI

This is published by Jide Martin’s Comic Republic. Ireti Bidemi is the Ibadan Superhero we’ve all been waiting for. Ireti Bidemi tells a story about the eponymous life of a female University of Ibadan student. She possesses superpowers and might be the reincarnation of the great Ireti Moremi of Ife Kingdom.

  • STRIKE GUARD

This comic book is published by Vortex Comics. It features Abolaji Coker on a quest to save Lagos. After a series of unfortunate events, Abolaji Coker, a Political Science undergraduate at the University of Lagos, wakes up in a hospital. He woke up with not only superhuman/spiritual abilities but a deity he constantly converses with within him. Now the gates of the ‘’other side’’ have been opened and he must protect the ones he loves with this new-found powers and responsibility. Brace yourself for what comes out first.
