Fire Guts Ondo INEC Head Office, Destroys Over 5,000 Card Readers

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has confirmed that fire broke out on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at the Ondo State Head Office of the electoral body in Akure.

According to an INEC official, who pleaded anonymity, the inferno, which gutted Over 5,000 card readers started around 8: 13 pm as he also attributed the cause to an electrical surge.

It was gathered that the firemen that came were helpless as they claimed not to have water before fire servicemen from Akure Airport arrived at exactly 9:14 pm and started helping to put out the fire.

Meanwhile, National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, who is in Ondo State in preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for 10th October 2020 reportedly rushed to the office at about 8 pm.

Speaking with journalists, Barrister Okoye said an investigation into the cause of the fire will commence promptly after the fire has been contained.

Meanwhile, the Administrative Secretary of the State, Mr Popoola and some staff of the Commission were also there.
