The Federal Government has announced an indefinite suspension of Twitter’s operation in Nigeria following the deletion of the President’s tweets.
Recall that days ago, several Nigerians, triggered by the President’s tweets that had undertones of violent threats to regional secessionists, called for the deletion of the tweets. After several reports and complaints were made, the microblogging social media platform deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet for violating Twitter rules.
FG Suspends Twitter Operations
The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, made this pronouncement on Friday, and the statement from his office read;
“The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.”
“The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
The Nigerian senate is currently deliberating on the Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation Bill 2019 popularly tagged the Anti-Social Media Bill that seeks to criminalize peddling false news on the internet.
