Federico Valverde of Real Madrid has used an unexpected means to win the Spanish Super Cup for Real Madrid. The game which ended 4-1 on penalty has left all football lovers around the world under shock as his action was considered a bad one. He was involved in a cynical foul which sent him off the pitch but the foul savaged his team and gave them the trophy.
Many people have come to credit him whereas others have condemned his action. Many are on the opinion that that desperate times requires desperate measures and that is what he did. There is a funny question thrown to people which goes thus: It’s 0-0. So far, so turgid. Extra time. And a top class attacker gets the ball, you are behind him and he is going for the goal. You can let him through, or hack him down. What do you do?
Federico Valverde Admitted he was wrong
After the tackle he was sent out of the pitch but Atletico never scored the goal. And at the end of the day Real Madrid went on to win the match 4-1 on penalties. Thousands of fans went on social media praising the 21-year-old Uruguay midfielder’s actions. Many even went as far as calling for a statue to be erected in his honor.
After the match, he apologised to Spanish forward Morata, adding: “I know it’s not good what I did, but I didn’t have any other option. After the game, former Argentina midfielder Simeone said: “The award for the best player had to do with that piece of play.” Federico Valverde won the final; it was the most important piece of play. It was probably going to be a goal. I told him that he did what he had to do at that moment.”
What’s more, despite being sent off, Federico Valverde was also chosen by Spain coach Luis Enrique as man of the match. The 22-year-old won the man of the match even though he was sent off through his rough challenge.
Players who have done Similar Action in the Past
One of the archetypes has to be Valverde’s compatriot Luis Suarez, who handled the ball in a world cup game against Ghana in the goal line. Suarez action awarded Ghana a penalty and he was sent out but Ghana missed the penalty. Another Uruguay player Federico Valverde did similar thing and was sent out likewise but went to win on penalties just in the case of Suarez.
Also another player who did similar thing is Pepe. Pepe gave Moroccan Medhi Benatia at the World Cup in 2018 and somehow still won man of the match. Cristiano Ronaldo winking after successfully lobbying the referee to have his then Manchester United team-mate wayne Rooney sent off for England at the World Cup in 2006.
The game ended in stalemate and was taken to penalty shootout. Saul Niguez and Ghanaian Thomas Partey missed their penalties and Real’s captain sent Jan Oblak the wrong way to secure the trophy. Real Madrid had ended the game with 10 men after Federico Valverde was sent off in extra time for fouling Alvaro Morata. Even Diego Simeone appluaded the tackle because he knows thats the only option left to do.
The dramatic finale was at odds with what was a largely turgid encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. Joao Felix had the best opportunity of a quiet first half, but he could only shoot wide from the edge of the box after he had been gifted possession by Ramos.
Real did way better in the second half of the game as Serbia striker Luka Jovic was driving just wide after he had wriggled past two Atletico defenders. Atletico did not manage a shot on target until the 79th minute. Former Tottenham right back Kieran Trippier was in top form as he did well went the passes going front. He was in constant search of Morata with the ball, Morata had a target volley to the post but it was parried away by Thibaut Courtois.
The game’s major flashpoint came with five minutes remaining in extra time when Valverde cynically hacked down Morata. It happened just outside the area when he was clean through on goal. The tackle was a cynical one. Sergio Ramos has now won 11 Spanish Super Cup triuphies.
