The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the renaming of the National Theatre Iganmu, Lagos, ahead of the Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry.
The National Theatre which is currently under renovation will now be called ‘Lagos Creative and Entertainment Center’.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, made this disclosure during the signing of an agreement on Nigeria hosting the first Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday.
The bilateral agreement was signed with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) at their headquarters.
The global conference scheduled for November 14 to 17 will be the first event hosted at the newly refurbished theatre.
Lai Mohammed said, “Nigeria will be hosting the event at the National Theatre in Lagos, which is currently being renovated for $100 million under a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee/Central Bank of Nigeria. It is the first of such renovation of the iconic edifice in over four decades.
“In addition to the renovation, new hubs are being constructed, within the premises of the National Art Theatre, for fashion, information, technology, film, and music. With that, the National Theatre is now known as the Lagos Creative and Entertainment Centre”
The minister also directed the contractors handling the reconstruction project to ensure prompt delivery ahead of the global event.
