FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Urges Nigerians To Fulfill Tax Obligations For Social Services

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on Nigerians to pay their taxes, emphasizing the government’s need for funds to provide essential social services. Wike made this appeal during the inaugural Abuja Business and Investment Summit organized by the Abuja Investment Company Limited on Wednesday.

During his address, Wike stated that the theme of the summit, “Optimising Investment Through Partnerships,” aligns with the Federal Government’s initiative to leverage collaboration to enhance investment opportunities. He underscored the misconception that the government does not require financial resources.

“The notion that the government does not need money was incorrect,” Wike asserted, highlighting the importance of tax revenue in funding public services.

Wike also shared insights on past government partnerships with the private sector that failed to yield returns. He indicated that the government will not continue to invest substantial amounts of money and land in ventures that do not guarantee a return on investment. “These are the kinds of things the government looks into and say how can I bring in the money and the land and at the end of the day, the government will not make a dime?” he remarked.

He further challenged the idea that the government should not focus on generating revenue, stating, “When people say the government is not to make money, who told you that? If government is not to make money, how do we have money to provide services? The government needs money.”

Wike reiterated the importance of tax compliance, saying, “That’s why the government say pay your tax; it’s very important.” He emphasized that while the government aims to create a conducive environment for investors, there must also be a reciprocal understanding that enables both parties to benefit. “That way, everybody will go home smiling,” he concluded.

As the government seeks to enhance investment and provide necessary services, Wike’s call for tax compliance underscores the crucial role that citizens play in supporting the nation’s development efforts.
