Two immigration officers have been banned by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, for extorting a fourteen-year-old flight passenger before embarki9ng on the trip.
The incident happened at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport as the officers have been permanently removed from airport duties and would no longer conduct any activities within and around the premises.
Officers Found Guilty Dismissed From Airport Services- FAAN
As indicated in a press statement issued in Lagos State by FAAN authorities on Saturday, the teenager extorted has been reimbursed and the working tools in relation to airport duties have since been seized from the officers as their services would no longer be needed there.
The news about the unsanctioned taxing of the girl-child was first made public by the mother of the victim who tweeted that her fourteen-year-old daughter who was traveling by herself was just extorted by immigration officers at the airport, adding that the officers collected all her cash before letting her go.
“They Didn’t even leave her with one kobo or one thousand naira so she can buy food while she waits. How wicked?” She said, expressing other grievances towards the incident.
On Friday however, the Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Airport Authority, Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, said in a statement that the officers have been caught and have refunded the money. Their duty cards have also been withdrawn.
