Alejandro Sabella of Argentina Dies at 66

Former Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella who played for Leeds and Sheffield United player has been reported died. The Argentina national manager died at the age of 66.

Sabella guided his country to the final of the 2014 Fifa World Cup which they lost to Germany. He made 76 appearances for the Blades between 1978 and 1980 before joining Leeds, for whom he played 23 times.

The manager had been in hospital since late November. His death comes just two weeks after the death of another former Argentina player and manager, Diego Maradona who died at the age of 60.

Argentina Football Association released a tweet which says: “The family of the #LigaProfesional football @AFA deeply regrets the death of Alejandro Sabella, and accompanies all his loved ones in this sad moment.”

Alejandro Sabella joined Sheffield United from River Plate after the club failed to sign Maradona. He returned to his home country after his subsequent short spell at Elland Road to join Estudiantes, whom he would later manage and lead to the Copa Libertadores in 2009.

His time as coach of the Argentine national team, which he took over from Diego Maradona in 2011, he did well to lead Argentina to the final but lost 1-0 in the last minute of the game to Germany. Alejandro Sabella played eight times.
