Euro 2020 Team Of The Tournament Raise Questions 1

Italy’s penalty shootout hero Gianluigi Donnarumma who won the official player of the tournament, got the highest number of votes. The goalkeeper got 62% of the vote. He beat England’s Jordan Pickford, Denmark’s Kasper Schmeichel and Wales’ Danny Ward to the number one spot.

All four defenders selected played in the final, with England full-backs. Luke Shaw had 48% of the votes, while Kyle Walker got 29% of the votes. Italy central defenders Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini got 37% and 33% respectively. England and Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire missed out, as he could only get 25% of votes.

Italy midfielder Jorginho had 30%, Spain teenager Pedri 13% and Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne 12% to make up the midfield, with no space for players like Paul Pogba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka.

Perhaps the biggest surprise came upfront. With 22.5% of selections, Czech Republic frontman Patrik Schick, who scored five goals, squeezed out Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo 21.5% votes and so could not make it the team of the tournament. Schick, Raheem Sterling, who got 35% votes and Italy’s Federico Chiesa (24%), made up the up-three frontmen.
