The man who failed to award Portugal an obvious goal that would have clinched them the win in their last World Cup qualifier has been relieved of his duties.
Wrong assistant referee in Portugal Serbia game dropped for Euro 2020
The assistant referee that ruled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Serbia, Mario Diks, has been dropped from the Netherlands’ officiating team for Euro 2020.
Match referee Danny Makkelie issued a public apology for the mistake after the game and has now dropped Diks from his set-up ahead of this summer’s European Championship.
Mario Diks, confirming the news to Omrop Fryslan, expressed his frustration over the final decision after many years of service, including last year’s Europa League final and Club World Cup semi-finals.
Makkelie has revealed that Jan de Vries has been drafted in to replace Diks in his setup. Still, out of respect for Mario and in the team’s interest, he declined to confirm whether the assistant’s error during Portugal vs Serbia led to his dismissal.
