EPL Set to Back-date Premier Resumption date from 30th April
The English Premier League (EPL) will be meeting today Friday to decide on the new date of resumption of the league games. Reports are that all 20 Premier League clubs will have a meeting which will be through video call and decide on the proper date to resume the league.
The Premier League could shift the date back into May or opt to follow Spain and France, who have shut down their leagues for an indefinite period. They will also discuss on pay cuts and and also if the should be counseled like they did in the Belgian league where Club Brugge has been declared the Champion with 15 points ahead of the second place Gent.
Moving the date back would give Premier League clubs the chance to offer their stadiums and medical staff to help in the fight against coronavirus. It will also help to correct some of the negative publicity that clubs are using government’s order on stay at home to punish workers.
Tottenham Hotspur is one of the four EPL teams that are charged with this offence, it is said that they are already using the government’s furlough scheme to compensate laid-off workers by up to £2,500-a-month, despite their players and manager Jose Mourinho, some of whom earn in excess of £100,000-a-week, remaining on full pay.
The EPL clubs will also discuss on pay cut to help in the fight aginst coronavirus, they will talk on players accepting pay cuts or, more likely, wage deferrals like the Italian side has done. Juventus recently accepted that their wages should be cut for for four months.
Some clubs in the EPL have already started the pay cut system like Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and Brighton counterpart Graham Potter have both taken the personal decision to accept cuts in the pay.The League Management will deliberate if it will be possible to do so for all the clybs.
EPL clubs also stand the chance of following the likes of France, Italy or Spain who have closed their league indefinately.
