English football club Southampton have gone top of the Premier League for the first time ever. Perhaps in a bid to celebrate it, they decided to take aim at US President Donald Trump.
The Saints ran out 2-0 winners against Newcastle United on Friday night. Goals in either half from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong made sure of the win.
After the game, they tweeted a picture of the Premier League table showing them top with 16 points.
It was captioned “STOP THE COUNT” in a nod to Trump, who tweeted the now-viral message on Thursday night after he was edged by Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential elections.
Fans have reacted to the tweet and they think it’s the best bit of trolling they’ve seen all year.
Adams put Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side ahead inside eight minutes with a fine volley, after Miguel Almiron was dispossessed on the edge of the box.
Southampton would dominate the whole game but a second goal didn’t come until the second half when Armstrong wriggled his way through to slot home past Karl Darlow.
Victory for the South coast side shows a remarkable turnaround from last autumn, when they were demolished 9-0 by Leicester City.
