Empire is ending after season 6. The final season will not feature Jussie Smollett. The decision comes just months after Jussie Smollett, one of the show’s stars, was at the center of a controversy over whether he staged an attack that he had described as a hate crime.
Fox executives declined to say if the decision to end the show had anything to do with Smollett’s recent controversies.
Fox made the announcement as it unveiled its upcoming lineup for the 2019-20 television schedule. Empire is heading into its 6th season and has seen declining ratings in recent years, pushing the former hit show out of the top 10 network entertainment series.
The cancellation of Empire comes as a number of its other shows have been axed in recent weeks. Fox has also cancelled Star after 3 seasons, while Kelsey Grammer legal drama Proven Innocent will come to an end after a single series.
Empire premiered on Fox back in 2015. The show stars Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray, Gabourey Sidibe, and Trai Byers. Multiple soundtracks were released featuring original songs from the series; Timbaland was the show’s executive music producer for the first two seasons.
Empire season six has no release date but is assumed to return in mid September 2019.
