Nigerians should prepare to pay higher electricity tariff as from July. The Minister of Sale Mamman made this known while speaking at an investigative public hearing in Abuja yesterday. He also said that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected a lot of the plans which were laid down before now. Those plans were meant to reposition the electricity market in Nigeria towards achieving financial sustainability under the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP).
The Minister made mention that the tariff review was scheduled for April before the outbreak of COVID-19. He also added that the subsidy being incurred to maintain the current tariff level will be suspended by July 2020.
Sale Mamman while still speaking at the event said the Power sector is currently facing some budgeting and funding challenges coupled with infrastructural misalignment and gross inefficiency laced with poor governance and ill policy coordination.
The Power Minister also applauded the effort of President Buhari on the Presidential Power Initiative which championed the Siemens Electrification Plan.
Concluding his speech, he reminded Nigerians that in the face of the dwindling revenue in the country, the sector will continue to work on policies and strategies that will enable the sector shoulder the effect of the pandemic.
