Edo Elections: Voters At Oredo Observes COVID-19 Protocols

Electorates at the Oredo Ward 4, Emokpae Model Primary School, Benin City on Saturday, Septemeber 19 observed the COVID-19 protocols during the Edo state governorship elections.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the electorates were seen observing physical distancing, washing hands and wearing face masks in Governor Godwin Obaseki’s polling unit.

An electorate, Miss Esosa Igbinegin said that voters were observing the COVID-19 guidelines adding that there were no issues at all. Another electorate, Miss Ehi Osagie said that security personnel were working hard to ensure a hitch-free election.

Meanwhile, voters in Oredo Ward 12 with 6 units in Oba market were wearing face masks but not observing physical distancing. It was gathered that residents moved around freely with their face masks with the security checkpoints provided at the centre of the community.

Everyevery.ng had earlier reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC announced that voters must wear face masks before they can be allowed to vote during the Edo and Ondo elections.

INEC National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who stated this in Abuja said the measure was part of efforts by the commission to ensure the safety of voters amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on the type of face mask voters are expected to wear, Yakubu said a face cover will be sufficient for a voter to be accredited to vote and not surgical masks to cast their ballots (Read more here).
