Disney just dropped a trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to Maleficent. Disney announced that the sequel to 2014’s Maleficent would be joining its hefty 2019 live-action line-up in early March.
The first movie told the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s point of view, turning the King into the real bad guy.
Maleficent is back with a broodier, black and green teaser and her signature epic horns. Set to the tune of Season of the Witch, it looks like Maleficent is still quite possibly Disney’s darkest villain. Although the epically-horned one might have some competition this time from Michelle Pfeiffer’s new character Queen Ingrith.
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Angelina Jolie as the titular villainess. Elle Fanning returns. As well as Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast and is rumoured to be a potential love interest for Jolie’s character. Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) is playing the film’s villain, while Jenn Murray, Kae Alexander, Fernanda Diniz and David Gyasi (Annihilation, Interstellar) are confirmed for roles. The film picks up several years after the original and, according to Disney, “continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen”. It releases on Oct. 18 in the U.S.
