The details of the closed-door meeting between Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja has emerged.

According to Tolu Ogunlesi, the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Digital and New Media, Jonathan visited Bamako, Mali, earlier this week to intervene in the current situation in the country.

EveryEvery.ng gathered that Jonathan briefed the President over the new political crisis in Mali after visiting Bamako, the capital of Mali on Tuesday, for mediation. He is expected to facilitate dialogue with all principal stakeholders in the West African country.

You will recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had in 2020 appointed former President Jonathan as a special envoy to lead the sub-regional body’s mediation mission in Mali.

The Presidential aide disclosed that Jonathan, who is ECOWAS Mediator on Mali, visited Buhari after meeting with the junta, the President and the Malian Prime Minister while in detention and helped secure their release.

Ogunlesi further stated that Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said ECOWAS position is that what happened in Mali is a coup; resignations were coerced. Onyeama added that the junta should return power to President Ndaw and Prime Minister Ouane.

Earlier, President Buhari had met with Faustin-Archange Touadera, President of the Central African Republic, President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younis Menfi and President Nana Akufo Addo of Ghana.
