Dealing with personal problems and societal pressures and being able to put your best at your job is already tasking. Adding a difficult and mean boss to all of these already existing issues is a huge ask. It is a nightmare dealing with a difficult boss. Being a bad boss also affects employee and subordinates performance and productivity.

According to BambooHR, 44 percent of professionals quit their jobs because of their difficult boss. An efficient and good leader boosts employees performance and increase productivity.

Borrowing from RiseSmart career coach Michele D’Amico, bad bosses fall into three different categories: narcissists, hands-off managers and micromanagers. Having these kind of bosses is not a reason to be scared. The different kinds of bosses and how to deal with them is as follows.

The Narcissist

This kind of boss is a sucker for admiration. Criticising this kind of boss is a ‘no go area.’ They love to be praised, not corrected and have a strong sense of entitlement. The dark side is, they will never give these outs. They take glory for all jobs done well and do not hesitate to push the blame to other people when things go wrong.

The hands-off boss

 If you are working with this kind of boss, then be aware that you will be left on your own most of the time. Some of them even do not understand the job properly as they provide the least assistance.

The Micromanager

These kind of manager is really difficult to deal with. They want to do everything by themselves and they want to be part of every activity and they want to be in control. They are not happy until they criticize your work and effect corrections. They are control freaks and feel offended anytime it doesn’t go their way or not satisfied with any form of work.

Ways to handle “bad bosses

  1. Always communicate properly. Communication is key and critical to every form of relationship. Ensure you get the instructions clearly before commencing any job. Ask questions if there is need.
  2. Be there for yourself: Never forget that in the midst of work and corporate environment, your sanity comes first. Do not hesitate to state politely actions you are not settled with. They can only react at the moment but your correction sticks.
  3. Keep proper documentation
  4. Try to be clear about issues and lay emphasis on delicate matters.
  5. Speak to your HR if dealing with the boss is becoming more challenging. They could try changing your team or department if need be.
  6. Deliver your work properly and try not to exceed deadlines. No sane boss will call you out if your work is good.
  7. Avoid excuses. Even if the boss is not mean, this will still tick them off if it is frequent.
  8. Be honest about your competence.
  9. Ask questions if you do not understand.
  10. Avoid side talks like a plague. Do your job and go home. That saves lots of headaches and ensures your sanity.
