Real Madrid’s latest signing, David Alaba, has cleared the air on him replacing or filling in the shoes of former Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos. The defender made said he does not intend to “replace” the former captain of the club. He said this following the jersey number he was given.
The number four jersey, which Sergio Ramos wore, was given to him, and so he made it know to the fans that he is not out to replace the former captain. The 29-year-old Austria international linked up with the Spanish side from Bayern Munich on a free transfer in May.
Sergio Ramos, who spent 16 years in Madrid, joined French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain after his contract with the club in June. According to David Alaba, he said: “We all know Ramos was here for a long time and wore this number, becoming the leader of this team.”
He also said: “But the truth is that yesterday I spoke to the club, and they told me that right now it’s the only available squad number. I didn’t want to start asking other players if they wanted to swap.” “I’m honoured to wear the number four, it’s a source of great pride and motivation for me, and I want to do it justice.”
Alaba made it clear that he is not in Real Madrid to compare himself to other players or replace them. He said he is there to be him, David Alaba. Ramos is Spain’s most-capped player and won five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues during his time at Real Madrid.
