Czech striker Josef Sural dies in minibus crash

Czech striker Josef Sural, died of wounds sustained in a road accident early Monday, the club announced on Twitter. The accident took place in the Mediterranean province of Antalya. The footballers on a minibus were returning from a Kayserispor away game.

The footballer was traveling on a private bus hired by his Turkish Super Lig team Aytemiz Alanyaspor.

“Our Czech footballer Josef Sural was gravely injured when our private minibus carrying seven of our footballers had an accident. They were coming back from an away game in Kayseri. Despite the Alanya Anadolu private hospital’s best efforts, Sural couldn’t be saved. May he rest in peace.”

The 28 year old died in the hospital. His fellow passengers included footballers Steven Caulker, Djalma Campos, Wanderson Baiano, Papiss Demba Cisse, Welinton Souza, and Isaac Sackey. Other players injured by the accident were also taken to hospital.

Turkey’s foreign minister has extended his condolences over the striker’s passing. In a phone call on Monday, Mevlut Cavusoglu offered his condolences to Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek, according to diplomatic sources.

On Twitter, Cavusoglu also said he sent his deep condolences to Sural’s family and Alanyaspor and wished a speedy recovery to the injured players.

Cavusoglu is also expected to attend a funeral ceremony for Sural  in Alanya, Antalya.

Traveling alongside Sural were former England international Stephen Caulker, ex-Newcastle United player Papiss Cissé, Angolan player Dlajma Campos, Brazilian defenders Baiano and Welinton, and Ghanian international Isaac Sackey.

Sural made 20 appearances for his country, last featuring in their Nations League defeat by Ukraine in October.The Football Association of the Czech Republic said news of Sural’s death “It has brought great sorrow. We will never forget you.”
