Software developer and American business magnate, Bill Gates, has advised the Nigerian government about the COVID-19 vaccines.
The philanthropist advised the federal government to wait for the GAVI vaccines.
Gates advised that investing proposed COVID-19 vaccine funds into other health-related areas would deepen vaccine coverage and save lives.
However, he highlighted the impact of investing funds into the health system, particularly the primary health care system.
According to him, expenditure on the primary health care system must be prioritised.
You recall that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said the Nigerian government needed about N400 billion to vaccinate 70% of Nigerians.
Everyevery.ng had reported that the World Health Organization had organised a press conference on the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in Africa.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti said the African continent is facing a second wave in the COVID-19 pandemic with more than 3.3 million cases.
The WHO Boss further stated that the hoarding of COVID-19 vaccines in Africa would only prolong the ordeal and delay Africa’s recovery.
“It would be profoundly unjust if the most vulnerable Africans are forced to wait for vaccines while lower-risk groups in rich countries are made safe,” she said.
Moeti further revealed that the CEPI vaccines, Gavi and W.H.O, lay the groundwork for equitable access to the vaccines (read more here).
