COVID-19: FG Calls For Caution Over Plans To Re-open Schools

The Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID-19 has reacted to the plans by some state government to re-open school for academic activities amidst the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, called for caution as he also referred to how the haste to re-open schools escalated the COVID-19 cases in some other countries.

Mustapha, who also doubles as the chairman of the PTF reiterated the need to stick to the pattern proven effective in the best interest of Nigerians.

He said the PTF appreciates the calls for re-opening of the education sector adding that it is imperative to be guided by experiences from countries where the re-opening of schools led to an increase in cases of COVID-19.

According to the SGF, more sectors of the economy may soon be reopened, especially as the nation would be entering a new phase of the eased lockdown.

However, he stressed that the PTF would present its recommendations to President Muhammadu Buhari this week, which will determine the next phase in the national response.

You will recall that the vice-chancellor of the Lagos State University, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun had on Monday announced the resumption schedule for students of the institution.

Also, Gboyega Akosile, the chief press secretary to Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said both primary and secondary schools would tentatively be reopened on September 21.
