COVID-19 Cases In Africa Surpasses 1 Million In 6 Months
The World Health Organisation African Region has disclosed that the COVID-19 cases in the African continent have surpassed one million six months after recording its index case.
In a tweet on Sunday, August 16, the WHO stated on its website that more than one million cases had been reported in every country on the African continent.
Also, in a video post on Twitter, the WHO African Region highlighted some of its responses to fight COVID-19 including the testing of over 9 million people for the virus.
The agency added that it has partnered some other stakeholders and the partnership has allowed more than 26 countries to use new data management tools to boost contact tracing.
WHO further stated that the number of oxygen concentrators in the African region has nearly doubled to more than 6,000 adding that over 4,000 health facilities have been assessed to bolster infection, prevention, and control of COVID-19.
According to the agency, over 10,000 health workers have been trained in key areas of the COVID-19 response.
It stated that more than 2.1 million testing kits and that more communities had been better informed about how to prevent COVID-19.
You will recall that Africa recorded its first coronavirus case on February 14, about two months after the disease broke out in China.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC has announced that the country has recorded 325 new cases of COVID-19 bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 48,770, while 36,290 have been discharged with 974 deaths as of Saturday, August 15.
