An Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, has sentenced an Ekiti prince to death by hanging for killing a monarch in the community.

The 42-year-old prince, Ademola Omoniyi, was arraigned on one count charge of murder, punishable in the 2012 criminal code law of Ekiti State.

Ademola Stephen Omoniyi on August 20, 2018, at Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Ekiti Judicial Division, murdered Oba Gbadebo Ibitoye Olowoselu ll, the Onise of Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, the charge read.

One of the community chiefs testified before the court and said, Ominiyi attacked the late Onise with a knife while he was trekking back to the main palace in the company of his clerk.

It was further alleged that Ademola Omoniyi has visited the king’s Palace to sit on his thrown, an action the chiefs frowned at.

The chief added that before the day, Omoniyi had been parading himself as the king of the town.

In his judgment, Justice Olukayode Ogundana dispelled the claim that the defendant was insane.

“Consequently, the defendant, Omoniyi Ademola Stephen, is hereby sentenced to death and shall be hanged until he breathes his last,” the judge added.
