The Federal High Court in Abuja has confirmed the deregistration of 32 political parties in Nigeria. Justice Anwuli Chikere who delivered the judgement in Abuja dismissed the suit filed by the political parties under contention against the authority of the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister them.
According to Justice Anwuli, the commission correctly deregistered according to the provision of sector 225(a) of the Nigerian Constitution. The political parties in court were among the 74 parties deregistered by the INEC on February 6, 2020. It was on grounds of poor performance at the 2019 general elctions.
The suits were filed last year to restrain INEC from carrying out the deregistration in line with their plans.
However, the exercise had been suspended by a court order earlier in February 2020.
