Having Corona virus in Nigeria is something that is possible and may happen sooner than we expect. Recent reports from China has shown that more than 200 people have been infected by the corona virus. Four people have also been confirmed dead from the outbreak. The outbreak began in December in Wuhan, China.
This Corona virus is clearly classified as a zoonotic virus which means it can be spread from animals to humans. According to a virologist at the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong, Leo Poon, “What we know is, it causes pneumonia and then doesn’t respond to antibiotic treatment, which is not surprising, but then in terms of mortality, SARS kills 10% of the individuals,”
As much as this corona virus may not seem as serious because of the low mortality rate, there is the danger of it causing severe respiratory complications for the older people.
The usual symptom of this virus is mild or moderate upper respiratory tract illness. It is usually similar to common cold. Although the degree of severity might increase for people with weakened immune system, the elderly or very young ones.
Corona Virus in Nigeria
So, talking about having this Corona virus in Nigeria, to some, it seems too far-fetched. However, it is a great possibility considering human exchange between Nigeria and China on a daily basis. Our dear country is also not so popular for its efficient quarantine procedures for individuals coming into the country. This exposes all of us to the risk of battling another epidemic in the near future. Nigeria must, therefore, see this as a possible health threat that may attack the country in no time.
At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be any record of a reported case of the Corona Virus in Nigeria. However, there is need for the National center for disease Control to find ways to prevent this Corona Virus from getting into Nigeria. If we do not want this corona virus in Nigeria, the time to act is now not when the deaths are being reported.
