Condemned ‘Ponmo’ Meat Floods Market, NAFDAC Sounds Warning

Condemned animal hides and skin, also called Ponmo, is currently i n circulation as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has sounded a stern warning that marketers should desist from its sales, while the general public avoid purchasing the commodity.

The agency announced yesterday that the consumable item is mainly rampant in Lagos State, adding that its consumers should by all means stop eating the meat as they are industrial animal hides and skin not meant for human consumption.

According to Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the agency, she pointed out that the agency had to swiftly move to confiscate a large quantity of the product and also stop seven importers.

The statement made available to journalists by the Resident Media Consultant to the agency, Sayo Akintola, explained that the meat is preserved with industrial chemicals bad for human consumption and would later cause dire effects to the health.

As an expert, she stressed that the danger of consuming the toxic ponmo include the risk of liver, kidney and heart damage, increased risk of aplastic anaemia, central nervous system toxicity and cancer, among others.
